Spokesman Jimmy Lee said a total of 16 workers, 11 deputies and five civilians, are retiring early because of the pension change. Another 69 workers are eligible for early retirement. In a court document filed as part of the litigation to stop the pension calculation change, Contra Costa County Sheriff David Livingston said, These employees offer a wealth of institutional knowledge and leadership, as well as unique skills and qualifications that are irreplaceable. The president of the Union for Contra Costa County firefighters said three of the district’s 11 battalion chiefs and the assistant chief have retired in the past month because of the pension change. Vincent Wells said he estimates at least 20 workers with the fire district have retired early in the past two years, since the bill that led to the pension change was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown in 2012.
